About Us

The NC CWA Political Council was formed in 1979 by the North Carolina CWA locals to improve our political knowledge and work for bills to improve our members’ working environment.  We incorporated with the NC Secretary of State and IRS in 1980.  Our first ten years focused on annual campaign management classes to give our members the knowledge of how a campaign is structured.  Training is now changing direction to where locals are requesting suitcase courses across the state.  Our members come from a much broader employment field making it necessary to follow their lead to do small scattered courses on a variety of topics.

We have had one of our members at the North Carolina Legislature on a part time basis working on any bills concerning our members’ jobs since 1981.  The legislature is in regular session on odd years lasting 6-8 months.  Even years are called short sessions that last 5-15 weeks with the original purpose to handle financial matters of state government.  We are nonpartisan in our work since our primary concern is the needs of our members.

CWA locals are structured so members control approximately one-half of their union dues at their monthly meeting.  The other half is budgeted at a yearly national convention with voting delegates elected by each local.  We pride ourselves as a democratic union managed from bottom up.  Our NC members work at U.S. Air from ticketing to flight attendants, Bellsouth, Embarq, Alltel, Verizon,  Cingular Wireless, AT&T, Lucent, General Dynamics, service representatives, printers, and manufacturing.

Nationally CWA is one of the major representatives of government employees from police officers to social services departments.  We always are looking for new membership to help them improve their employment and living conditions.  We believe in a fair day's pay for a fair day's work.
